Fahd death delays emergency Arab summit

SHARM EL-SHEIK, Egypt, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- An emergency Arab summit set for this week in Egypt has been postponed due to the death of Saudi King Fahd.

Arab League Secretary General Amr Mousa announced the postponement Monday.

"In view of King Fahd's death, it was decided to postpone the Arab summit, and a new date will be fixed later," Mousa said at Sharm el-Sheik where the summit was supposed to convene Wednesday.

"The summit will be held with the same agenda to discuss the issues at stake in Iraq and the Palestinian territory," Mousa added.

He said he hopes the parley will convene this month to discuss Israel's imminent withdrawal from Gaza by the middle of the month.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak called for the emergency summit last week, stressing the need to hammer out a joint Arab stance on developments in Iraq and the Palestinian territories. Mubarak insisted on holding the summit in Sharm el-Sheik although it was the scene of triple terror bombings in July 23 in which more than 80 people were killed.
