Officials look into roller coaster crash

LOS ANGELES, July 31 (UPI) -- State investigators are looking into the roller coaster accident that injured 15 people at Disney's California Adventure, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Officials sought information on whether human or mechanical error was to blame for Saturday's accident, in which two cars on the "California Screamin'" ride collided. The injuries were all considered minor, the newspaper reported.

The ride's manufacturer, Swiss-based Intamin AG, had no comment.

The ride has a history, the Times said. In March 2004, a jury held the park was not liable for a Milwaukee man's claim that California Screamin' gave him whiplash.

Last month the California Supreme Court strengthened safety standards for roller coasters and other rides, equating the safety requirements of those rides to those of normal modes of public transportation.

The law could eventually lead to more lawsuits and safer rides. California Screamin' has been closed until the investigation is complete.
