Slain Brazilian had expired visa

LONDON, July 28 (UPI) -- A Brazilian man who was mistakenly shot and killed by London police who thought he was a terror suspect had an expired visa, British officials said Thursday.

The British Home Office said the visa for Jean Charles de Menezes had expired in 2003.

Menezes, 27, was shot and killed by police who had followed him from his home to a subway station thinking he was a suspect in last week's attempted transit system bombings. When authorities tried to stop him, Menezes fled, prompting police to open fire, shooting eight times in all.

Police have since admitted he was not connected to the bombings and have offered their apologies in a statement.

His body was returned to Brazil Thursday for burial later this week. The family of Menezes asked the British government to punish the officers who killed him.
