Van Gogh killer to face terror charges

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, July 27 (UPI) -- The killer of film-maker Theo Van Gogh was charged Wednesday with being a member of a terrorist network plotting to kill Dutch parliamentarians.

A day after receiving a life sentence for shooting and stabbing the Dutch filmmaker, Mohammed Bouyeri was accused of being a key member of the Hofstad group.

The 27-year old Amsterdam born Moroccan-Dutch is believed to have been the leader of the group, which plotted to kill Parliament members Geert Wilders and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, both fierce critics of fundamentalist Islam.

Bouyeri will be tried together with 12 other members, whom he allegedly encouraged to reach their goals through violent actions. Dutch police unraveled the network following the murder of Islam critic and provocateur Van Gogh in September 2004.

The trial is set to begin by the end of the year.
