Japan allocates $14 million to Africa aid

TOKYO, July 26 (UPI) -- Japan's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday it would provide $14 million in food aid to the World Food Program for distribution in Africa.

The aid is intended for displaced persons in southern Sudan and people suffering from protracted food shortages in Kenya, Lesotho and Mozambique due to drought since last year. The aid will also cover people affected by the conflict in Uganda.

"Japan is committed to making a significant contribution toward the alleviation of hunger and food shortages in Africa," a ministry statement said.

African development aid was a top issue at the recent G8 Gleneagles Summit and will be a major focus when the U.N. Millennium Development Goals are reviewed at the United Nations General Assembly later this year.
