LOS ANGELES, July 25 (UPI) -- Steven Spielberg's latest secret project has been officially titled "Munich," Variety reports.
Tight security has made it nearly impossible to get any information about the film Spielberg is shooting in Malta about the Israeli campaign to assassinate the Palestinians responsible for the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, Variety said.
The project has been mired in controversy since reports surfaced the movie used as a source a book called "Vengeance," whose accuracy has been widely questioned, Variety said.
However, the Spielberg camp says "Vengeance" was only one of many resources used in telling the story.
Furthermore, Spielberg spokesman Marvin Levy told Variety much of the "Vengeance" criticism was the result of a disinformation campaign waged by Israelis upset that the book revealed the assassination squad was authorized by Prime Minister Golda Meir.
