TEHRAN, July 25 (UPI) -- Iranian lawyer and Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi called an appeal court that heard the case of a reporter's murder illegitimate.

Ebadi is representing the family of Zahra Kazemi, who died while in police custody in Iran in July 2003. Kazemi, who held dual Iranian and Canadian citizenship, was arrested while she took photographs outside of a Tehran jail.

"The court took no notice of our arguments up to now and did not call any of our witnesses," Ebadi told the BBC.

During Monday's hearing, foreign journalists were kept out of the courtroom.

The Canadian government has called for an impartial investigation into Kazemi's death.

Ebadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work for human rights in Iran.
