KANO, Nigeria, July 24 (UPI) -- A packed bus fell off a bridge into a river in Nigeria, killing 56 passengers, after the driver may have dozed off, authorities said.

Five survivors from the bus crash are being treated at a hospital, near Kano, said Ibrahim Ahmed Ibrahim, of the federal road safety authority. The driver died, the Kenya Broadcasting Corp. reported.

The bus was en route from the commercial city of Lagos 684 miles to Maiduguri.
