Police search for fake NYC doctor

NEW YORK, July 23 (UPI) -- New York City police are searching for a woman who claimed to be a doctor, after a "patient" of hers ended up in intensive care.

Prosecutors allege Nelly Cornejo Zeller disappeared after a woman landed in intensive care Sunday from an intravenous dose of a Vitamin B complex made in Ecuador, the New York Daily News reported Saturday.

The patient came to Zeller suffering from fatigue and was given an intravenous drip. However, she suffered from sepsis, a bacterial infection, police said.

The patient is now in stable condition.

"Zeller's conduct was dangerous and placed the lives of those who came to her to be treated at risk," Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

Prosecutors believe Zeller targeted illegal immigrants without medical insurance -- a sign in Spanish outside a Queens, N.Y., clothing store said "Dr. Nelly Cornejo Zeller" promised "examinations."

Zeller faces charges of assault, reckless endangerment and practicing medicine without a license.
