Gay pride marchers outnumbered in Riga

RIGA, Latvia, July 23 (UPI) -- Latvia's first gay pride march attracted more protestors than marchers.

The BBC reported police arrested six people for throwing eggs and yelling at the marchers. Police also had to change the march route because hundreds of people who had turned out to oppose the marchers blocked Riga's narrow streets.

The march was also opposed by Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis, who said in an interview with the national television network holding a homosexual parade in central Riga near the Doma Church is "unacceptable."

Lars Peter Sjoberg, who came from Sweden for the march, told the BBC he was shocked by the aggressiveness of the demonstrators.

"It won't stop me from helping my Latvian friends fight for their rights," he said.
