Russian police catch fish poachers

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, Russia, July 20 (UPI) -- Police in a Russian fishing haven are catching poachers and have found illegal processing plants for illegal seafood.

Russian state-funded news agency Itar-Tass reports police in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky took three tons of salmon caviar and over 20 tons of pollock and salmon from poachers since Monday.

Police say the poachers were not carrying any forms and couldn't prove they caught the seafood legally.

Authorities have initiated 41 criminal violations of fishery laws against over 240 people since the beginning of summer, confiscating 4.5 tons of salmon caviar, 147 tons of salmon and 20 tons of crab.

Seven processing plants have also been shut down.
