Palestinian fire continues around Gaza

TEL AVIV, Israel, July 18 (UPI) -- Palestinian militants fired rockets and mortars at an Israeli town and at Gaza Strip settlements but the intensity of the attacks was less than in recent days.

More than 100 shells and rockets have been fired in recent days at Gaza settlements, military installations, and at the Israeli town of Sderot north east of the Gaza Strip, Ha'aretz noted.

Early Monday two Qassam rockets struck Sderot and five mortar shells were fired at settlements and military bases in the Gaza Strip but no casualties or damage were reported, Ha'aretz noted.

The newspaper's Web site said that Israel has warned Palestinian President Chairman Mahmoud Abbas demanding he order his security forces to do everything to stop the fire that killed an Israeli woman last week.

Israel has said that if Abbas is unable to stop the shelling soon, the army would launch a major ground offensive in the Gaza Strip.
