PARIS, July 18 (UPI) -- The French government Monday launched a highway-privatization initiative to bring millions of euros into the state's coffers.

The Economy and Transportation Ministries floated a call for bids to acquire three public highway firms, Les Echos newspaper reported.

The privatization would help pay for needed infrastructure investments, junior Minister Christian Estrosi told France 2 TV.

Earlier this summer, the Paris government launched the privatization of the state-owned utility company Gaz de France. The sister electricity company, EDF, is expected to be partially privatized later this year.
