Weekend violence rages throughout Iraq

MUSAYYIB, Iraq, July 17 (UPI) -- Police sources said a car bomb explosion Sunday killed 12 people, including nine policemen, and 5 others were injured in a Shiite area in Baghdad.

The sources said a suicide bomber driving a booby-trapped car smashed into a check-point for the Interior Ministry police in Hai al-Bayaa in southwestern Baghdad.

Sunday's blast came a day after 60 people were killed and 90 others were wounded when a suicide attacker in a fuel tanker exploded in al-Musayab, 37 miles (60 kilometers) south of the capital.

Al-Qaida in Mesopotamia, led by Jordanian-born Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, claimed responsibility for a campaign of suicide attacks in Iraq in the past two days and vowed to carry out more in the future.

Iraq's National Assembly Sunday discussed ways to stop the rise in suicide attacks and asked Iraqis to observe three minutes of silence at noon Wednesday to protest the bombings.
