Rhode Island newborn killed by family dog

COVENTRY, R.I., July 14 (UPI) -- A Rhode Island couple's Siberian husky dog attacked and killed their first child, a week-old infant in its crib.

Coventry police Lt. Ronald DaSilva confirmed the baby's death but did not release the couple's name or the baby's gender as detectives were investigating.

Town Council Vice President Richard Sanetti told the Providence Journal the dog inflicted severe injuries and the child died of internal bleeding.

The mother attempted to drive the baby to the hospital, but stopped at a fire station where firefighters performed first aid and took the infant to the hospital emergency room.

Town Councilman Gregory Laboissonniere said hospital officials closed off the section of the emergency room where they examined the infant.

"Everyone in that emergency room ... was just a basket case," he said.

The dog was being held at the Coventry animal shelter, and police refused to comment on its future.
