Kennedy says Santorum should apologize

WASHINGTON, July 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Edward Kenney, D-Mass., wants Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., to apologize for his comments on "liberalism" and child sexual abuse in the Catholic church.

In a rare personal rebuke of a colleague, Kennedy demanded a public apology Wednesday from Santorum for his on-line comments three years ago connecting Boston's "liberalism" to the child sexual abuse scandal in the church, the Boston Globe reported.

Kennedy said Santorum "owes an immediate apology to the tragic, long-suffering victims of sexual abuse and their families in Boston, in Massachusetts, in Pennsylvania, and around this country."

Earlier this week, Santorum stood by comments made on a Catholic Web site in 2002. In an interview with the Globe, Santorum reiterated his view that the "basic liberal attitude" in Boston fostered an environment where sexual abuse of children could occur, the Globe said.
