Gang of baby traffickers arrested in China

BEIJING, July 14 (UPI) -- Chinese police have arrested 28 suspected baby traffickers and rescued 27 children, 10 days to 18 months old, state media reported Thursday.

The gang, arrested by railway police in Henan province, is believed to be part of a larger trafficking ring that has kidnapped children in the southwest province of Sichuan and the eastern province of Shandong, China News Service reported.

Some of the kidnapped infants were not given adequate care and died before they could be rescued. Police are still working on the case, which could turn up more suspects and abducted children.

China's birth control policy, which allows only one child per family, is seen as one of the causes of baby trafficking. The majority of kidnapped infants are boys, traditionally seen as more valuable than girls in China.

Police rescued some 3,500 children from kidnappers last year.
