Spain: Majority favor ETA talks

MADRID, July 13 (UPI) -- A majority of Spanish citizens favors talks with the Basque separatist group ETA if the separatists agree to renounce violence.

A poll published in La Vanguardia newspaper said 57 percent of Spanish are in favor of the proposal.

The Basque group is blamed for more than 800 deaths in a more than 30-year campaign to establish an independent country in northern Spain and parts of southwestern France.

In June, ETA announced a partial truce saying it would no longer target politicians.

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero called on the group to renounce its armed struggle altogether. Earlier this year the Spanish Parliament gave the green light for Zapatero's government to negotiate with ETA.

Earlier this week four bombs attributed to ETA exploded in northern Spain. No one was hurt.
