U.K. urges EU to seize terror assets

BRUSSELS, July 12 (UPI) -- Europe must step up efforts to seize terrorists' assets in the wake of the London attacks, British Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown said Tuesday.

Speaking in Brussels, Brown told EU finance ministers that problems would continue if supplies of money into terrorism were not cut off.

The European Union agreed a plan to coordinate anti-terror efforts after the Madrid bombings last year; the chancellor now wants it implemented immediately.

Many countries had invested heavily in systems to track down sources of terrorist finance, he said.

The measures Brown wants pushed through include a code of conduct to prevent terrorists abusing charities, compulsory sender identification on wire transfers and an update of EU money laundering rules.

He also wants to ensure all member states can take action nationally to freeze terrorist assets, and to complete the European Commission-sponsored review of EU structures on tackling terrorists' finance.
