FBI chided for losing two aging hit men

CHICAGO, July 11 (UPI) -- Two Chicago mob experts have criticized the FBI for allowing two elderly hit men vanish before they could be indicted for murder, the Miami Herald reports.

Until last month, 75-year-old Frank "The German" Schweihs lived openly in Dania, Fla. He and lifelong mob associate Joseph "The Clown" Lombardo were among 14 alleged Chicago mobsters indicted April 21 in an FBI investigation into 18 unsolved mob hits over the past 20 years in Illinois.

Both men have vanished, and last month, the FBI posted a $20,000 reward for their capture.

Now, John Flood, a board member on the Chicago Crime Commission and Jim McGough, a respected expert on Chicago mob activity claim the agency is wasting its time.

"Everyone knew that Joey Lombardo was going to be indicted, and how the FBI didn't have him under constant surveillance is puzzling to me," McGough said.

But FBI Special Agent Ross Rice, spokesman for the Chicago FBI, said: "The resources that are required to conduct a surveillance around the clock for days in advance make something like this prohibitive. We have to use those resources very judiciously."
