West criticism of Ahmadinejad downplayed

TUNIS, Tunisia, July 7 (UPI) -- An Iranian diplomat Thursday brushed aside Western criticisms of President-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as aimed at portraying Iran as non-democratic.

Iranian ambassador to Tunisia Baker Sakhai was quoted as saying calling Ahmadinejad hardliner "is part of the hostile campaign against Iran."

He said the Iranian people are not surprised by such a campaign because they know the West had been hoping former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani would win the election.
