Brazil: PT loses another leader to scandal

BRASILIA, Brazil, July 6 (UPI) -- Brazil lost another key member of the ruling Workers' Party, or PT, due to an ongoing scandal plaguing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

PT Treasurer Delubio Soares was the second leader from the ruling party to step down this week. On Monday Secretary-General, Silvio Pereira resigned.

A one-time ally of President Lula and the PT, Federal Deputy Roberto Jefferson, accused the administration last month of orchestrating a bribery scheme whereby lawmakers would be paid for their support on key congressional votes.

Though PT denies the allegations, the ill-effects of the scandal continue to dog the administration.

In June, Lula's chief of staff and trusted adviser, Jose Dirceu, stepped aside. Many analysts speculate PT party president Jose Genoino will likely resign his post next.
