Saudi Arabia beheads wife murderer

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, July 5 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia Tuesday beheaded a Saudi man convicted of killing his wife while she slept, following an argument.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement that Sultan bin Mosaed al-Lakmani killed his wife in the province of Yunbo' in central Saudi Arabia with a single gunshot while she was sleeping.

He then stabbed the back of her head with a dagger. The motive of the crime was an argument over money.

The convict was beheaded with a sword in line with Muslim Sharia, or law.

Tuesday's execution brings to 50 the number of people put to death this year in the oil-rich kingdom, which models its justice system on Islamic laws.

Convicted murderers, rapists, armed robbers, repeat drug traffickers and Muslims who renounce their religion are punished by death, often by beheading in public squares.
