SANAA, Yemen, July 3 (UPI) -- Military officials said a Russian-made MiG-29 of the Yemeni Air Force crashed north of the nation's capital.

The sources said the 2-seater plane crashed due to an engine malfunction.

Last year, Yemen purchased 14 fighter jets from Russia to be delivered gradually.

Russia said two months ago it handed over eight MiG-29 jets, regarded as the best aircraft in the country's air force.
