Palestinian prisoners start hunger strike

GAZA, July 3 (UPI) -- Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails Sunday reportedly began a hunger strike in solidarity with inmates in solitary confinement.

Meanwhile, Palestinian Prisoner Affairs Minister Sufian Abu Zaideh urged international rights groups to pressure Israel to end the punishment of solitary confinement.

He called for Israel to respect the "humanity of the prisoners by treating them in accordance with international charters and regulations."

Abu Zaideh said the solitary cells in Israeli jails were "deprived of any life, where no sun or air enters because there are not windows."

He described the cells as being very small with high humidity, alleging they were "shelters for insects and rats."
