COEUR DALENE, Idaho, July 2 (UPI) -- An missing Idaho girl was rescued from her alleged captor Saturday, but police said her brother, who had also been missing since May, is probably dead.
Shasta Groene was recovered and convicted sex offender John Edward Duncan III was arrested after an alert waitress spotted the two eating at a restaurant and the manager called police.
The 8-year-old girl appeared to be healthy, the Coeur d'Alene Press reported. However, Capt. Ben Wolfinger of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Dept. said investigators fear her 9-year-old brother Dylan, who is still missing, is dead.
Shasta and Dylan Groene disappeared in May. The bodies of their mother, her boyfriend and an older brother were found tied up and beaten in their home.
Wolfinger said Duncan has a criminal record dating back to a rape arrest in Washington State when he was 16, and that he runs a Web site urging shorter prison terms for sex offenders, CNN reported.
Duncan, of Fargo, N.D., is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Wolfinger said.
