Bolivia has no date for elections

LA PAZ, Bolivia, July 1 (UPI) -- Bolivian lawmakers have failed to agree on a date for the country's next presidential election.

Even after two days of debate ended Friday, federal deputies and senators still hadn't set a date, La Razon reported.

Recently appointed President Eduardo Rodriguez promised in June that Bolivia would hold fresh elections by the end of the year.

Rodriguez came into power after former President Carlos Mesa stepped down amid nationwide protests calling for his resignation.

The focal point of the demonstrations, however, was the demand for the nationalization of Bolivia's lucrative gas industry. Rodriguez has since addressed the issue, but he contends it should be handled by the country's next president.
