Tsunami warning system launched

PARIS, June 30 (UPI) -- Plans for a tsunami-warning system were announced Thursday, six months after the deadly tragedy devastated parts of Asia and Africa.

Dubbed the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System, the operation formally came into existence with the creation of a intergovernmental coordinating group, UNESCO announced in Paris.

The tsunami body will conduct research, share data and coordinate with national early warning systems in tsunami-affected countries, UNESCO said in a statement.

Its secretariat will be based in Perth, Australia.

The system is expected to be fully operational by July 2006. Among other things, it will include gauges to detect sea levels, deep sea pressure and seismographic networks.
