Spain legalizes gay marriage

MADRID, June 30 (UPI) -- Spanish lawmakers legalized gay marriage Thursday following criticism this week by conservative religious groups.

The announcement of legalized same-sex unions inspired gay activists on hand to watch the tally to break out in applause and cheers, El Mundo reported in its online edition.

The law gives homosexual couples the same rights as heterosexual couples, including inheritance and pension rights.

Earlier this month the Senate rejected the bill. On Wednesday opponents of gay marriage presented lawmakers with a petition signed by 600,000 people against same-sex unions.
