NATO head visits Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine, June 27 (UPI) -- The head of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization arrived in Ukraine Monday for talks on that country's membership in the European military alliance.

During his stay, Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer will meet with President Viktor Yushchenko on Ukraine's progress in democratic reforms, Radio Free Europe reported. Those reforms are requirements for gaining membership in NATO.

NATO says priorities in Ukraine include strengthening democratic institutions, reinforcing political dialogue, and reinvigorating NATO-Ukraine cooperation in defense and security-sector reform.
