Opposition leader ready to join cabinet

AMMAN, Jordan, June 26 (UPI) -- Lebanese opposition leader Michel Aoun Sunday said he was ready to join a coalition government with a clear national agenda, a report said.

Aoun, whose slate swept parliamentary Christian seats in parts of Mount Lebanon, told the Jordanian al-Yawm daily he had no problem with being a member in the cabinet being formed in Beirut.

This was the first time Aoun has not ruled out a government position since he returned from a 15-year exile in France in May after Syrian forces withdrew from Lebanon in late April.

Aoun, who staunchly opposed the Syrian presence in his country, also criticized accusations by some Lebanese opposition groups that Syria was responsible for a recent series of assassinations of political leaders and journalists in Lebanon.

He said it was necessary to "look for who is benefiting from the assassinations in Lebanon, and it is unacceptable to accuse Syria of being behind them without evidence."

The former army chief denied he has any contacts with Damascus, but called for diplomatic ties between the neighboring countries.
