Jerry Ortiz, who had been with the sheriff's department for 15 years, was shot Friday afternoon in an apartment complex in Hawaiian Gardens, a city near Long Beach. Ortiz, who had arrived at work early, had gone out alone to interview a witness in a gang investigation.

Orozco's arrest occurred without incident after an intensive search of the neighborhood.

Ortiz, who married for the second time two weeks ago, was described as an intense and hard-working officer.

"He was an outstanding person, who would go out of his way to help people," Detective Colin Orpe, Ortiz's partner and a longtime friend, told the Times. "We're all mourning."
