Shark attack kills girl in Florida

DESTIN, Fla., June 25 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old girl died Saturday after a shark attacked her while she swam in the Gulf of Mexico of the Florida coast, police said.

The teen was swimming with a friend using "boogie boards" in front of a campground near the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, near Destin, Fla., when the shark attacked her leg, CNN reported.

"For a regular swimmer, she was pretty far out," Capt. Danny Glidewell, of the sheriff's office, told CNN. The girl was about 200 to 250 yards offshore.

The teen's friend saw the attack, he said.

Although shark sightings are not uncommon along the Florida coast, there had been no shark sightings Saturday before the attack, said Lt. Frank Owens of the Walton County Sheriff's office.

Green flags indicated calm surf on the beach.
