Egypt bans opposition leader from travel

CAIRO, June 22 (UPI) -- Egyptian authorities banned the chief of the opposition al-Ghad party Ayman Nour from traveling to Brussels to address the European Parliament.

Nour, a candidate to the presidential elections, told UPI Wednesday that he planned from going Belgium. He had planned to go to Europe Thursday, but the office of the public prosecutor said he needed travel permission because of a lawsuit filed against him.

He said the travel ban is unconstitutional and that he filed a lawsuit to challenge that decision.

Nour said the party's deputy president for organizational affairs will read the speech on his behalf before the European Parliament.

Nour's trial on charges of forging his party's power of attorney documents is to start next week. The defendant denied the accusations saying they were politically instigated and aimed against his party's reformist agenda.
