Chilean statue thief set free

SANTIAGO, Chile, June 20 (UPI) -- A Chilean student who confessed to stealing a valuable statue by French sculpture Rodin has been freed from jail.

Luis Onfray, said he discovered "The Torso of Adele," on loan from the Rodin Museum of Paris, in a park in Santiago over the weekend, La Tercera newspaper reported Monday.

However Onfray later confessed that he stole the statue. He said he wanted to prove how vulnerable the statue was to theft.

The statue -- worth about $500,000 -- has been returned to the museum.
