Brother testifies in 1964 killings case

PHILADELPHIA, Miss., June 19 (UPI) -- The brother of a man charged with the 1964 killings of three civil rights workers testified in Mississippi that he was unaware of his brother's Klan membership.

Edgar Ray Killen's brother, Oscar Kenneth Killen, turned the question back on the prosecutor, The New York Times reported Sunday.

When district attorney Mark Duncan asked Killen if he was aware his brother had been a member of the Ku Klux Klan, the witness said: "No sir, I didn't ever know it. I've heard more talking to that your daddy and granddaddy was in the Klan than I have him, to tell the truth."

Duncan said during recess he had never seen or heard any evidence that his father or grandfather were Klan members.

Killen's testimony for the defense came after the prosecution rested its case after only three days of testimony.
