Hurricanes and storms kill eight in China

NANJING, China, June 17 (UPI) -- A hurricane and hailstorms in China's coastal provinces have killed at least eight people and injured hundreds of others, China Daily reported Friday.

The east-coast province of Jiangsu was the worst hit, with seven dead and several hundred injured when a hurricane and torrential rains swept the area Tuesday night.

Nearly 200,000 homes were destroyed in the storm, and power and telecommunications were cut over a wide area.

In the provincial capital of Nanjing, boats on the Yangtze River were sunk, washed ashore or set adrift along a 12-mile stretch of the river.

A hailstorm in neighboring Anhui province killed one person and left 65 injured Wednesday. The storm damaged 36,800 houses and causes millions of dollars in damage to crops.

According to official figures, floods and storms have killed at least 255 people since last month. The number does not include the 103 people, mostly children, who died last Friday when swollen mountain streams caused a landslide that buried an elementary school in Heilongjiang province.
