YANGON, Myanmar, June 16 (UPI) -- Amnesty International says arrests of political activists in Myanmar are rising as the country's most noted democracy supporter remains under house arrest.
The group will issue a report on the new arrests of political activists and also on Aung San Suu Kyi and hundreds of other prisoners of conscience in the military-ruled nation, formerly called Burma.
Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, is expected to spend her 60th birthday on Sunday under house arrest.
Amnesty is launching a global petition calling on Myanmar's military authorities to stop abusing the justice system to silence peaceful political activists and to immediately and unconditionally release all prisoners of conscience.
"Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been denied her liberty for almost two-thirds of the last 16 years and has never been charged or brought to trial. It is a totally unacceptable price to pay for her peaceful political activities," said Amnesty Secretary-General Irene Khan.
