Uproar over gay-themed books for children

NEW YORK, June 15 (UPI) -- Books written with the idea of being inclusive are sparking debate among librarians looking for a place for gay-themed stories aimed at children.

One of the books in question is "King & King," about a prince who falls in love with another prince. The target audience is pre-schoolers.

A vice president at Simon & Schuster told ABC News that it's important for children to see people both like themselves and like people they have never met. A San Francisco bookseller described the book as "very positive" and "inclusive."

It wasn't received that way elsewhere, including Louisiana where the state legislature wrote a resolution urging librarians to keep such works away from children. Three other states debated similar measures and some are worried about censorship.

American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression President Chris Finan told ABC News, "If you let all of the people who have problems of one kind of another with books restrict the material that offend them, there won't be anything left in the library for their kids or other people's kids either."
