Moderate quake jolts Southern California

PALM SPRINGS, Calif., June 12 (UPI) -- An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale rocked Southern California Sunday morning, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the moderate quake occurred at 8:41 a.m. PDT, and was centered about 18 miles southwest of Palm Springs.

A spokeswoman for the Palm Springs Police Department said Sunday afternoon there had been no reports of any injuries or property damage resulting from the quake.

The quake -- which was felt as far away as Los Angeles and San Diego -- was centered in a mountainous region of the San Jacinto fault zone, where seismologists routinely observe smaller magnitude quakes.
