Iran warns U.S. against intervention

TEHRAN, June 12 (UPI) -- Iran warned the United States Sunday against intervening in the upcoming presidential election, urging U.S. officials to be cautious in their statements.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told reporters U.S. officials "should be cautious in their statements on the Iranian elections so they don't become shocked with the results of polls."

He insisted the U.S. comments on the Iranian election scheduled June 17 were aimed at reducing voter turnout "while people are showing enthusiasm to participate" in the polls.

Asefi said the American officials "speak with resentment and ignore the realities of the Islamic Republic."
