KUWAIT CITY, June 12 (UPI) -- A Kuwaiti woman was appointed as a Cabinet minister Sunday for the first time in the Arab emirate's history.

The official Kuwaiti news agency said the emir, Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah, appointed Maasouma Mubarak as minister of planning and minister of state for administrative development.

The appointment came a week after the government named six women for the first time as municipal council members.

The Kuwaiti National Assembly last month allowed women to participate in elections for the first time in the oil-rich Arab state.
