Bolivia: Last of protest roadblocks lifted

LA PAZ, Bolivia, June 12 (UPI) -- Fuel and food moved freely into the Bolivian capital for the first time in weeks Sunday after protesters lifted the last of the roadblocks.

La Paz has been suffering a gas and food shortage due to the ongoing protests and blockades. Tens of thousands of protesters clogged the streets of La Paz almost every day last week.

Protesters were calling for the nationalization of the country's gas industry, a constitutional assembly and early presidential elections.

On Thursday lawmakers accepted the resignation of President Carlos Mesa -- who last week said he was stepping down -- and appointed Supreme Court leader Eduardo Rodriguez as the new president. Rodriguez said in his inaugural address that new elections with be held before the end of the year .

The new Bolivian president is scheduled to meet with protest leaders Sunday to discuss gas nationalization among other issues.
