China hotel fire kills 30

SHANTOU, China, June 11 (UPI) -- A fire that swept through the upper floors of a four-story hotel in Shantou, China, has killed at least 30 people and injured 15 others.

China's state-run Xinhua news agency said it took firefighters three hours to douse the flames that swept the top three floors at the Huanan Hotel Friday.

Four of the injured were in critical condition Saturday.

The governor of the southern province of Guangdong went to the scene and directed rescue operations and later visited the injured in hospitals.

No cause for the fire was immediately known, but investigators remained at the scene throughout the night.
