The public broadcaster NHK reported that the explosive resembled a Molotov cocktail, saying it was contained in a glass bottle and had spread flames.

At around 10 a.m., the boy ignited gunpowder loaded in a bottle and hurled it into a third-year classroom.

Forty students in the classroom and 13 others were injured in the explosion and were rushed to two hospitals in Hikari. One of them suffered serious wounds after fragments of the bottle pierced the victim's legs and stomach, while the other 52 suffered slight burns or complained of sore eyes and throats because of the smoke, the Mainichi Shimbun reported.

Teachers grabbed the student who launched the attack and held him in another room before handing him over to police officers.

School authorities cancelled classes for the remainder of the day and students were sent home.
