KABUL, Afghanistan, June 9 (UPI) -- An Italian employee of Care International has been released after being held hostage for a month in Afghanistan.
Interior Minister Ali Ahmed Jalali told CNN pressure from the government and Afghani people and negotiations by tribal leaders helped free Clementina Cantoni.
"She came from Italy, left her home and helped the Afghan people," Jalali said. "She was working with widows, the most vulnerable victims of war."
Cantoni was reported to be in good condition after her 24-day ordeal. She was abducted at gunpoint May 16 as she drove home in Kabul.
A few hours before Cantoni's release young girls in Kabul distributed 3,000 stickers supporting her, the BBC said.
Cantoni's kidnappers made a number of demands while she was being held, threatening to kill her if the government did not provide more Islamic schools, an increase in aid to opium farmers and the removal of a liberal radio program. But Italian officials told CNN nothing was given in exchange for her release.
Cantoni has been working for Care for 10 years and had been in Afghanistan since 2002.
