LA PAZ, Bolivia, June 8 (UPI) -- Leaders of the Organization of American States rejected a proposal by the United States for monitoring democracy in the region.
Following a late-night set of OAS meetings Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the majority of leaders said they supported a Chilean idea of member nations working together to evaluate situations in OAS countries while respecting the sovereignty of any nation, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
Venezuela was an ardent critic of the U.S. proposal, accusing the Bush administration of more meddling in other nations' affairs.
On the final day of their three-day summit OAS leaders also said they were committed to helping Bolivia during its political crisis. Protests have gripped the country for weeks, prompting President Carlos Mesa to resign.
