U.N.: Militia machete attack in E. Congo

UNITED NATIONS, June 7 (UPI) -- The United Nations says militia attacks in eastern Congo have forced more than 1,000 people to flee, some with limbs hacked off.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Tuesday a rampage by Mayi-Mayi elements in the village of Sonsa last week prompted some 100 people to flee to the town of Manono, Katanga province, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

During the attack, 15 women and girls were raped and forced to flee naked, able to move only at night due to their lack of clothing, said OCHA at U.N. World Headquarters in New York.

More than 1,600 other people fled their homes in the villages of Kyungu and Nkumbu to seek shelter in Mpiana, another town in the Manono region, for fear of attack.

In the South Kivu town of Nindja, OCHA said militia members killed 19 civilians a week earlier prompting some 6,000 people to flee to Ihembe, near Walungu. Among the seriously wounded, some had their limbs hacked off by machetes.
