Saudi king to leave hospital this week

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, June 5 (UPI) -- Saudi officials said Sunday King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz will be discharged from hospital this week after being treated in intensive care since May 27.

A Saudi official speaking on condition of anonymity said the Saudi monarch, who was rushed to hospital with a high fever and difficulty breathing, would leave the hospital after substantial improvement in his condition.

King Fahd, 84, "responded very well to the treatment and his temperature is back to normal," the official told the Khaleej Times Online.

The king's half brother, Crown Prince Abdullah, has been virtually running the affairs of the oil-rich Arab kingdom since the monarch suffered a stroke in November 1995.

King Fahd, who has been in and out of hospitals since his stroke, has ruled the country since 1982.
