AMMAN, Jordan, June 4 (UPI) -- Jordan Islamic lawmakers called on Prime Minister Adnan Badran Saturday to exclude Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Chalabi from a general amnesty.
Chalabi was sentenced to 22 years in prison by a Jordanian military court in 1992 for embezzling more than $200 million from Petra Bank, resulting in bankruptcy.
The head of the Islamists' bloc in parliament, Azzam Honeidi, issued a memorandum arguing against a pardon for Chalabi.
It said a pardon would "be a humiliation for the Jordanian people and undermines its rights in a major economic crime that cost the state's treasury millions of dollars."
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani raised Chalabi's case with Jordanian King Abdullah during a visit to Jordan last month, and asked for a settlement of the case.
As a result, Jordan set up a special committee to study the possibility of issuing a general amnesty to include Chalabi.
